During basketball and volleyball we see an increase in pain in the front of the knee. The pain begins due to the sudden increase in jumping which takes place in these sports. The jumping motion places a lot of force on the kneecap. Muscle weakness in the thigh and hip muscles as well as alignment issues during the take off and landing are risk factors for developing this pain. We encourage athletes to slowly increase the amounts of jumping to allow the conditioning process to take place. If the athlete notices pain then we typically have a therapist evaluate and work on the areas of weakness.
