During basketball and volleyball we see an increase in ankle sprains usually due to rolling the ankle or landing awkwardly. It is important to have the appropriate shoes to protect the ankle in these sports. If the athlete has swelling and pain after this type of injury that is not responding to ice, elevation, compression, and rest we recommend evaluation. Often times we use xrays to evaluate for fracture versus sprain.
